- Used in machine construction and automotive engineering to retain castle nuts and washers on shafts and threads
- Pins are inserted through the hole and the ends splayed and bent over to limit traverse movement
- Widely used to retain clevis pins
- It is recommended that pins are used that are twice the length of the hole but may be shortened
- Pins are subject to work hardening so should only be used once
